O Arco da Ponte, da Rua de Olivença no Pinhal Novo, designa-se como sendo um arco todo ele em pedra e alvenaria da época que existia de baixo da ponte, por onde passavam carros e pessoas. Na continuação da ponte, pela lateral, o comboio circulava.

Na 1º reunião, que ocorreu na Junta de Freguesia do Pinhal Novo, para concretizar o projeto de criar uma obra artísticas foram-nos contadas várias histórias e lembranças, pela população ali presente. Recordou-se que os garotos deste sítio brincavam por baixo do arco e escorregavam nas pedras dos contrafortes da estrutura. Havia nos dizeres, uma certa alegria, sobre esse passado de jogos simples e improvisados. Foram também contadas outras histórias, tal como a dos sapatos usados, que ao deixarem de servir, mas ainda em bom estado, eram ali colocados de forma anónima para quem os precisasse. Era uma bela solidariedade, que os levava à esperança.

Com o modernizar das linhas férreas e da estação, foram obrigados a desmantelar toda a estrutura antiga, para dar lugar a uma nova ponte mais contemporânea e de maior estrutura, que serve esta população e todos os que por aqui passam diariamente, mas sem a intimidade de um Arco.

Durante vários anos todas estas pedras ficaram no olvido, mas guardadas para uma posterior reconstrução e numa promessa de que se devia fazer algo com elas. Desta forma, o município de Palmela lançou um desafio a cinco artistas plásticos: apresentarem algo que venha enaltecer e recordar este arco, meditando sobre ele, e daí imaginar e construir uma obra de arte.

A peça escultórica

A obra resume-se a seis elementos principais, todos eles concebidos de modo distinto e em múltiplas matérias das quais algumas provêm do próprio Arco da Rua de Olivença, numa formação de norte para sul. O espaço concedido para a colocação da obra, mede de norte a sul uns 45 metros, por 15 metros de leste a oeste.
